Health: BMI ~ Body Mass Index

#1

Post by MavrikManna »

I have a large frame even though I am short. The standard BMI  charts do not apply to me. So I am sensitive to statements by people that suggest that frame size doesn't matter. It does! But maybe it can get a generalized ball park figure to start with. All that being said..it is safe to ignore BMI because there is no way to specifically measure my specific BMI using any standardized methods. I have a 7" wrist that does not even show up on the below lists. I have had a 7 inch wrist all my life no matter my weight.

Since I have no intentions on doing any further research into BMI related stuff an AI search on the topic will have to suffice. Feel free to make any comments you want on the subject. ~ Manna

AI: To choose your goal BMI, required for the ideal weight calculator, you need to take into account your bone structure. Larger bones are heavier and therefore you should aim for a BMI closer to 24.9. If you have a small body frame, your goal BMI should be closer to 18.5.

AI: To account for bone size in BMI assessments, you must first determine your body frame size (small, medium, or large) by measuring your wrist circumference relative to your height. Larger frames can support a higher weight, meaning an ideal BMI for large bones is closer to 24.9, while small bones should be closer to 18.5.  Determine Your Body Frame Size
  1. Measure your wrist: Use a tape measure around the smallest part of your wrist.
  2. Compare to height:
    • Women < 5'2": Small (<5.5"), Medium (5.5-5.75"), Large (>5.75").
    • Women 5'2"- 5'5": Small (<6"), Medium (6-6.25"), Large (>6.25").
    • Women > 5'5": Small (<6.25"), Medium (6.25-6.5"), Large (>6.5").
    • Men > 5'5": Small (5.5-6.5"), Medium (6.5-7.5"), Large (>7.5").
 Body Frame Adjusted BMI Interpretation
  • Small Frame: Aim for the lower end of the "healthy" BMI range (approx. 18.5–21).
  • Medium Frame: Ideal in the middle of the "healthy" range (approx. 21–23).
  • Large Frame: Can comfortably exist at the higher end of the "healthy" range (approx. 23–24.9).
Note: While bone density and frame size play a small part in total weight, standard BMI does not distinguish between fat, muscle, and bone, and may not be accurate for athletes, as bones only make up about 15-20% of total body weight.  Alternative MeasuresFor a more personalized assessment that accounts for body composition rather than just frame size, consider using:
